The United States Steel Corporation, which played a critical role in helping the Allies defeat Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany in World War II, is now being sold to Japan’s largest steelmaker.
Japan’s largest steel company Nippon Steel has decided to acquire an American company for $14.1 billion.
According to Nikkei, the purpose of the acquisition is to create a supply structure for key products in Japan and the US amid growing demand for high-quality steel used in the production of electric cars, as well as for the sake of economic security of the two countries.
According to Kyodo news agency, Nippon Steel aims to achieve annual steel output of 100 million tons, for which it has previously absorbed a number of companies from India and Thailand.
