French President Emmanuel Macron traveled to energy-rich Central Asia this week, where he is visiting Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, two big uranium suppliers.

French nuclear company Orano SA is already exploiting uranium deposits in Kazakhstan through a joint venture with state-owned Kazatomprom.

Deepening Orano’s presence was on the menu of discussions, according to one delegation insider.

In addition, TotalEnergies SE signed an agreement to help develop a wind farm in Kazakhstan, and Alstom SA signed an agreement for the possible production of electric trains.

As a result of the two presidents’ negotiations, Kazakhstan agreed to increase exports of oil and uranium to France.

France is now largely dependent on enriched uranium from Russia, last year Electricite de France purchased 153 tons of it from Russia.

President Emmanuel Macron wrapped up a visit to that country Thursday and traveled to neighboring Uzbekistan.
