Germany is considering importing natural gas from Nigeria to ensure security and diversification of energy supply, Chancellor Olaf Scholz said during a visit to the country.

“This will also have an impact on the global gas price,” Scholz said in the Nigerian capital Abuja on Sunday after a meeting with president Bola Tinubu.

Tinubu said that given Nigeria’s sizable resources, “we are ready to encourage investments in a gas pipeline.”

Germany, which shut down its last nuclear power plants this year and turned away from Russian pipeline gas during last year’s energy crisis, will need large volumes of LNG to supply its energy-intensive industry.

So far, the European economic powerhouse is getting crude oil from Nigeria, but not gas.

Scholz’s trip to Africa this week is his third since taking office two years ago.

On Monday, Scholz also plans to travel to Ghana.

That’s what it’s like to be late to a party
