Saudi Arabia will have so-called digital twins, or virtual versions of five cities, including Riyadh, Medina and Mecca.

They will be built by South Korean Internet leader Naver Corp. which won a contract to build and operate a cloud platform for Saudi Arabia.

The digital twins would provide real-time modeling capabilities and will be used for urban planning, monitoring and flood forecasting in Saudi Arabia within five years, the company said in a statement.

The Korean internet giant, which provides services ranging from a search engine to generative artificial intelligence, cloud and mapping services, beat out several global technology firms to get the project.

The countries have been expanding their cooperation over the past year, and the deal was part of $15.6 billion worth of deals and memorandums of understanding that were scheduled to be inked during the South Korean president’s visit to Saudi Arabia over the last weekend.
