France has overtaken Sweden to become EU’s top net power exporter.

According to a report by EnAppSys Ltd., France recorded a total net export of 17.6 terawatt-hours, with the majority of power being supplied to UK and Italy.

French nuclear power is a cornerstone for the European electricity market, even though its capacity is around 50%. Its nuclear plants continue to play a crucial role in the market, despite outages and high generation from renewable sources such as solar power.

Meanwhile the closure of nuclear power plants in Germany caused “the country’s energy balance to shift toward imports,” the report said.
